The humanitarian situation in Gaza has reached catastrophic levels, with United Nation agencies issuing urgent warnings about the collapse of both health and food systems. The blockade imposed by Israeli authorities has led to severe shortages of food, water, fuel, and medical supplies, resulting in widespread hunger, disease, and trauma among the 2.1 million survivors. United Nation agencies have repeatedly called for immediate, unimpeded humanitarian access and for all parties to respect international humanitarian law, but their appeals have largely gone unheeded.

Health System Collapse

The World Health Organization (WHO) has activated a 60-day operational plan to restore and expand health services in Gaza, focusing on maternal and child care, trauma treatment, and the management of life-altering injuries. The blockade has led to the closure of bakeries, community kitchens, and warehouses, leaving children and vulnerable populations without access to basic food and medical care.

“Bakeries have shut. Community kitchens have closed. Warehouses stand empty. Children have gone hungry,”

stated the UN Humanitarian Country Team, highlighting the severe shortages facing the population. UNRWA health services are described as irreplaceable, with 45 percent of essential supplies already out of stock and around a quarter projected to run out in under two months. The resumed bombardment and the 11-week-long siege have further worsened an already dire situation, severely hindering humanitarian actors’ ability to respond to the population’s need for food, water, sanitation, shelter, and more.

Food System Collapse and Famine

The World Food Programme (WFP) has reported that famine conditions have been declared in Gaza by the Integrated Phase Classification (IPC), a result of what is widely described as a mass starvation strategy by Israeli authorities. Since October 2023, malnutrition and starvation have caused 227 deaths, including 103 children. The fuel shortage in Gaza has reached critical levels, threatening the operation of hospitals, water systems, sanitation networks, ambulances, and bakeries.

“Fuel is the backbone of survival in Gaza. Without fuel, these lifelines will vanish for 2.1 million people,”

warned a joint UN statement. The blockade has also led to the near-total halt of food aid, with only some shipments being allowed through under restrictive conditions. The humanitarian space is shrinking, and essential international NGOs may be forced to leave due to new registration requirements, further worsening the crisis.

United Nation Analysis and Statements

United Nation agencies and experts have emphasized the dire consequences of the ongoing blockade and violence.

“The humanitarian situation in Gaza is at its darkest point yet,”

stated the Humanitarian Country Team, highlighting relentless bombardment, mass displacement, and people being “starved and denied the basic means of survival.” The United Nation has repeatedly called for all crossings and routes to be used to allow a flood of aid into Gaza, including food, nutrition supplies, shelter, fuel, clean water, medicine, and medical equipment.

“Urgent action is needed now to halt and reverse starvation. Humanitarian space must be protected, and aid should never be politicised,”

declared a joint statement by 27 partners, including the EU and major humanitarian organizations.

United Nation experts have warned that the ongoing Israeli attacks against the Palestinian population in Gaza constitute a blatant violation of the ceasefire agreement and could amount to genocide.

“Escalating atrocities in Gaza present an urgent moral crossroads and States must act now to end the violence or bear witness to the annihilation of the Palestinian population in Gaza – an outcome with irreversible consequences for our shared humanity and multilateral order,”

the experts said, citing over 52,535 deaths and 118,491 injuries as of May 2025, with 70 percent of the casualties being women and children. The United Nation and its partners have also emphasized that aid operations must remain guided by the principles of “humanity, impartiality, independence, and neutrality,” and that all 16 UN entities and major humanitarian partners working in Gaza have endorsed this unified position.
