The Geneva Council for Rights and Liberties unequivocally condemns the shooting of a civilian by a police officer during recent protests in Kenya. Such acts of violence against peaceful demonstrators represent a grave violation of fundamental human rights and undermine the principles of justice and accountability that must govern law enforcement agencies worldwide.

We express our deep concern over the use of excessive force by security personnel and the resulting harm inflicted on innocent civilians exercising their right to peaceful assembly and free expression. The right to protest is a cornerstone of democratic societies and must be protected without fear of violence or repression.

We call upon the relevant Kenyan authorities, including the national government, the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA), and judicial institutions, to conduct a thorough, impartial, and transparent investigation into this incident. Those responsible must be held fully accountable in accordance with national and international human rights standards.

Furthermore, we urge the Kenyan government to take immediate measures to ensure the protection of civilians during protests and to implement comprehensive reforms within the police force to prevent recurrence of such violations. The respect for human rights and the rule of law must remain paramount in all state actions.

The Geneva Council for Rights and Liberties stands in solidarity with the people of Kenya and reiterates its commitment to advocating for justice, accountability, and the protection of human rights globally.
