The group Cubalex documented in March 2025 247 human rights abuses in Cuba, based on its latest report. The past month was characterized as having the “greatest number of acts of violence and civil insecurity reported by the monitoring team of Cubalex since this labor started more than two years ago.”
In 50 towns in the entire country as well as special municipality Isla de la Juventud, a total of 103 acts of violence have been reported on social media and free press Cubalex detailed. Among the repressive acts, there were 496 repressive incidents reported, which include 64 arbitrary detentions, 55 transfers to police or detention centers, 49 threats or coercion, 46 violence, 45 abuses of religious freedom, and 70 abuses against persons deprived of liberty.
Havana reported the most violations that were 53, followed by 48 in Santiago de Cuba and 44 in Matanzas. Additionally, Santiago de Cuba had 46 violations, with 18 in Santa Clara and 15 in Perico also notable. Overall, 167 individuals, including 68 women and 99 men, experienced at least one violation during the month.
The leaders of the opposition Berta Soler Fernández, José Daniel Ferrer García, Félix Navarro Rodríguez, and Ángel Juan Moya Acosta registered the greatest frequency of repressive incidents against them.
The most repressed organizations were the Ladies in White, the Opposition Movement for a New Republic (MONR), the Patriotic Union of Cuba (UNPACU), and Cuba Decide.
For Cubalex, grievances persist from prisons over the substandard quality of food, cuts in set rations, and bans by wardens on letting prisoners keep part of the food provided by their relatives. Such a situation has resulted in malnutrition among prisoners and the spread of diseases like tuberculosis and hepatitis.
One of these cases is that of Loreto Hernández García, who presents a serious health condition. Hernández has been refused proper medical attention or a humanitarian release.
Political prisoner Lizandra Góngora has also been refused transfer to a prison nearer her province of residence. In March, the Cuban political prisoner Mayelín Rodríguez Prado, who is charged with broadcasting the August 2022 protests in Nuevitas on her social media, was brutally assaulted in the Camagüey Provincial Women’s Prison. In jail, where she is being sentenced to 15 years of deprivation of liberty, the repressors of the regime assaulted her. They struck her and took her to her cell.
