In a significant development, the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Mr. Volker Türk, has thrown his weight behind the Arab Parliament’s urgent call for accountability amidst escalating human rights violations in the Gaza Strip. This endorsement comes as a response to the unwavering efforts of the Arab Parliament, led by H.E. Mr. Adel bin AbdulRahman AlAssomi, in addressing the dire situation in the region.

Mr. Türk, in a letter addressed to H.E. Mr. AlAssomi, expressed deep concern over the alarming violations of human rights and international humanitarian law that have been unfolding in Gaza since October 7, 2023. He further emphasized the deteriorating conditions in the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, underscoring the urgent need for intervention.

Echoing the sentiments of the Arab Parliament, Mr. Türk reiterated the United Nations’ call for an immediate ceasefire, the unimpeded delivery of humanitarian aid, and the adherence to international law. Moreover, he emphasized the imperative of holding accountable those responsible for perpetuating human rights violations in the region.

The UN Human Rights Chief affirmed his commitment to continue advocating for justice and accountability, pledging to present additional reports on Israeli settlements and the human rights situation in the occupied Palestinian territory, including East Jerusalem, at the upcoming 55th Session of the Human Rights Council.

Expressing gratitude for the collaboration and coordination efforts, Mr. Türk commended the Arab Parliament for its steadfast commitment to addressing the plight of the Palestinian people. He reiterated the UN Human Rights Office’s unwavering solidarity with all victims of rights violations and its dedication to ensuring that human rights are universally upheld.

In response, H.E. Mr. AlAssomi welcomed the endorsement from the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, emphasizing the importance of international support in ending the ongoing conflict and ensuring justice for the Palestinian people. He urged swift action from international organizations, as well as national, international, and regional parliaments, to bring about an immediate ceasefire and put an end to the atrocities committed against Palestinians.

The Geneva Council stands in solidarity with the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights and the Arab Parliament in their pursuit of justice, accountability, and peace in the Gaza Strip and the wider Palestinian territories. As an independent news organization committed to upholding human rights and promoting transparency, Geneva Council pledges its continued support in amplifying voices for justice and accountability on the global stage.
