GENEVA – The Geneva Council for Rights and Liberties demands the immediate release of the Libyan Member of Parliament Siham Sarqiwa after she was kidnapped by an armed group from her house on Wednesday, July 17, 2019.
The Geneva Council strongly condemns the attack on Sarqiwa and her husband. She’s taken to an unknown location by militia in Benghazi as part of systematic and widespread violations taking place in Libya. The Council expresses deep concern about the fate of Sarqiwa and suspects that she’s being ill-treated after the interruption of contact with her since abduction without any official information
In her latest comments, Sarqiwa expressed her rejection of the attack by the retired brigade commander Khalifa Hafater on the capital Tripoli since April, it is likely that her abduction is related to these statements
The Geneva Council for Rights and Liberties considers the case of Sarqiwa as enforced disappearance in flagrant violation of international human rights law, especially given her legal status and parliamentary immunity
The Geneva Council calls upon all parties to the conflict in Libya to abide by their obligations to respect human rights and to refrain from systematic behavior of inciting violence and instigating hostilities among Libyans.
